Most people feel that they are not living to their fullest potential.
For most, this “knowing” is subconscious. That is, a part of us knows, but consciously, we do not connect with this reality.
For some of us, however, as we age, this awareness becomes more conscious.
We know the difference between when we are operating from our highest potential and when we are not. But why do we often not operate from our innate power in the first place?
One reason is that our brains rarely work the way they are designed to work.
The pineal gland and many other vital glands and organs are not working within their intended design. Fortunately, we have the power to change that.
Why is activation of the pineal gland important?
Why spend so much time discussing a small gland the size of a grain of rice? When the pineal is not working properly, we cannot access our potential. It’s that easy.
Even more puzzling, when the pineal is not working properly, we often don’t even know there is a problem.
In the Hindu tradition, the third eye is called ajna chakra. Hindus believe that a blocked ajna chakra leads to:

Without a doubt, these are qualities that anyone can associate with our greatest potential. These qualities are also essential for our spiritual and psychological development.
Activation of the pineal gland brings a greater connection to the natural world and a willingness to let go of the ego’s pursuits that exclude our soul.
Lucid dreaming, astral projection, and enhanced imagination are all related to activating the pineal gland. The pineal can be a gateway to greater creativity.
The pineal in ancient traditions
Although modern science and medicine have only just begun to understand the critical role of the pineal gland, ancient cultures and traditions already have this knowledge.
For Buddhists, the pineal is a symbol of spiritual awakening. In Hinduism, the pineal is the seat of intuition and clairvoyance. For Taoists, the pineal is the mind’s eye or the heavenly eye.
In ancient Egypt, we find numerous references to the third eye and the pineal region. In Matthew 6:22, the Bible says, “The light of the body is the eye; therefore, if your eye is unique, your whole body will be full of light ».
Notice how “eye” is unique and “your eye is unique.” The ancient Greeks believed that the pineal was our connection to thought itself. Herophilus described it as the “sphincter of thought.”
The French mathematician and philosopher, René Descartes, shared this opinion. Speaking of the pineal, he wrote in Treatise of Man: “My point of view is that this gland is the main seat of the soul, and the place where all thoughts are formed.”
For at least several thousand years, both in the East and the West, the pineal gland has been seen as a connecting link between the physical (3D) world and a psychic dimension beyond it.
Why is the pineal gland called the third eye?
Cultures dating back to ancient Egypt referred to the pineal as the inner eye or the third eye. Why?
When the pineal is cut and left open, the pinealocytes line up on the inside. These pinealocytes look like the rods and cones in the retina of our eyes.
The pineal even has retinal tissue and the same physical wiring to the visual cortex of the brain. In fact, the pineal gland appears to be the third eye. How ancient cultures knew this is unclear.
In “Light: Medicine of the Future,” Jacob Liberman explains that light stimulates the pineal in creatures such as birds, lizards, and fish directly through the skull.
“In many reptiles, the pineal has all the characteristic photoreceptor elements of an eye. Hence it is known as a ‘third eye’ because, in many creatures, it resembles an eye both in structure and activity. ‘
In mammals, however, light stimulates the pineal exclusively through the eyes.
Liberman believes that humans initially received light stimulation through the top of the head (crown), as described in many ancient and mystical traditions.
The pineal, then, represents the eye that sees inward. Which means that the activation of this third eye helps us to see life beyond the typical limitations of our perception, providing clarity of vision.
How to activate the pineal gland
So if you wish, together we will explore some interesting territory.
Each tradition has different methods of activating the third eye. Different methods may be appropriate for different people based on type, temperament, or some other factors.
In the rest of this guide, we will review five methods of activating the pineal gland. They include:
- Look at the sun.
- Brainwave entrainment.
Through a review of each of these methods, a curious pattern emerges. We will discuss the importance of this pattern in a final section.
While everyone should decalcify and detoxify their pineal gland, activating the pineal gland should not be taken lightly (as it is in many New Age circles).
Researcher David Wilcock explains that if the pineal gland becomes “stuck” it can cause schizophrenia, delusions and hallucinations upon awakening.
Some traditions, such as the Northern Reality School of Taoism, also warn against esoteric methods of altering your consciousness. Therefore, care and attention is recommended on this trip.
The third eye may be designed to open naturally when conditions are appropriate for an individual. In modern times, however, these conditions rarely arise spontaneously.
Ancient cultures had wise shamans and elders who guided such processes for the younger generations.
Today, however, each of us is responsible for our inner journeys towards awakening and higher development.
Pineal Gland Activation Method: Meditation
Perhaps the most traditional method of opening your third eye is through formal sitting meditation.
Meditation is an important topic for anyone interested in accessing their highest potential. But for our purposes here, through various meditation techniques, you can stimulate and activate your pineal gland.
How? The pineal gland is sensitive to the bioelectric signals of light and dark in its environment. Meditation can activate this bioelectric energy. And, with practice, you can direct this energy to the pineal gland, stimulate it, and help it open.
For your meditation to be effective, your mind must stay still so that the dispersed energy in your body can consolidate.
However, we cannot calm our minds with force. Instead, we just watch or observe our mind and allow it to stand still effortlessly.
Third eye meditation
A “third eye meditation” might look something like this:
Sit in a comfortable and relaxed posture. Close your eyes or just lower your lids.
Allow your breathing to become deep and slow. (That is, do not force it to become deep and slow, but simply observe the breath. Independent observation will naturally slow down your breathing.)
Rest your attention on the third eye region just above and between your two eyes. (Again, without effort or force). That’s. You can also imagine that you are breathing a golden white light through the center of your third eye.
The key is to stay relaxed and avoid trying to force exercise. Stop wanting or expecting any results as this will create tension that will block the flow of energy in this process.
Why this meditation works
By focusing your attention on the pineal gland, you are focusing your internal energy on this region.
This relaxed approach releases neuropeptides and nitric oxide, which trigger the relaxation response. These chemicals will allow you to move into deeper meditation while stimulating the third eye region.
Remember that melatonin is the main chemical produced and circulated by the pineal gland. It is not surprising that in the brains of meditators they find an increase in the secretion of melatonin.
Using functional magnetic resonance imaging of individuals in a particular form of sitting meditation, researchers from Taiwan University found that meditation activates the activation of the pineal gland.
You will know that your third eye meditation is working when you begin to feel slight pressure in this region or a throbbing sensation. You may feel as if there is a mini heart beating on your forehead, an unusual sensation for sure.
Pineal Gland Activation Method: Observing the Sun
This next method, if you are not familiar with it, will seem strange and perhaps dangerous. We have all been told that not looking directly at the sun will hurt our eyes.
One thing with fair certainty: For those of us committed to actualizing our higher potential, we must be willing to challenge everything we think we know.
We repeatedly learn that most of what I have been “taught” is either completely wrong or simply very limited. And sungazing is a perfect example.
Gazing at the sun is a powerful and ancient technique with enormous benefits. The theory behind observing the sun is that you are absorbing the sun’s energy directly through your eyes and skin.
The man who eats the sun
Hira Ratan Manek (known as HRM) is the person who brought this method to the mainstream. Through observing the sun, Hira Ratan Manek and many others have been able to go long periods of time (years!) Without eating and staying physically healthy.
A team of doctors from the University of Pennsylvania examined Hira Ratan Manek 24/7 for 130 days. They confirmed his claims that it survives largely in sunlight with a minimal amount of water.
Neuroscientist Andrew Newberg and pineal gland authority George Bernard studied Hira Ratan Manek’s brain during this 130-day period. They discovered that the gray cells in Hira Ratan Manek’s brain are regenerating.
Also, the pineal gland contracts in individuals after their mid-fifties. In Hira Ratan Manek’s case, this 64-year-old man’s pineal gland was expanding! (His pineal was measured at 8 x 11 mm compared to the maximum average size of 6 x 6 mm.)
Sunlight reduces the harmful effects of artificial blue light. Here, we are learning that the support of the sun goes further: the sun can help us restore the original size and function of this all-important gland.
Note : Most recently, during began to eat. Apparently, the documentary “Eat the Sun” exposes it as a fraud, but it is more likely that it is a consequence of an archetype that owns it.
Like many of the so-called “gurus,” he inflated himself and now cannot regulate his behavior. Sungazing, like all techniques, must be used responsibly and with great care.
The benefits of fasting
Although stopping eating is not the goal of pineal gland activation, many who gaze at the sun report that hunger is reduced. Eating becomes an option, but there is no longer any hunger or physical need to eat.
This 2011 study by the Intermountain Medical Center found that periodic fasting:
- Lowers the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
- It causes changes in blood cholesterol levels.
- Increases Human Growth Hormone (HCH).
Human Growth Hormone is a metabolic protein that protects lean muscle and metabolic balance. Human growth hormone increased an average of 1,300 percent in women and 2,000 percent in men during a 24-hour fasting period.
Most foods block the flow of energy or chi in the body. The less you eat, the more energy you can experience. Finally, fasting also supports detoxification, which could be the biggest benefit to your pineal gland.
How to use sun observation to activate the pineal gland
Why do they tell us that it is dangerous to look at the sun? Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage the retina. But did you know that the UV index is usually zero during sunrise and sunset?
When looking at the sun, it is important to only look at the sun within the early morning and late afternoon, when the sun still has an orange glow.
You don’t look at the sun during the day when the UV index is high. Observing the sun is reportedly safe as long as the UV index is less than 2. The local weather source cites the current UV index.
In fact, using Hira Ratan Manek’s method, you start within the first 15 minutes of sunlight in the morning and the last 15 minutes at the end of the day.
At first you only stare at the sun for a couple of seconds, accumulating up to 45 minutes per day over the course of nine months. Sun gazing is also done barefoot, so you get the added benefits of grounding as well.
But even if you’re not interested in following this particular protocol, the occasional first thing in the morning or evening sun gaze will support your efforts to activate your pineal gland.
Finally, ditch your sunglasses. Direct and indirect sunlight stimulates the pineal, causing it to produce serotonin. This neurotransmitter will elevate your mood and your energy level. Direct sunlight will also make you more resistant to blue light.
Pineal Gland Activation Method: Qigong
Qigong translates as “cultivation of vital energy” or “energy ability.” Qigong exercises are designed to increase the practitioner’s sensitivity to the flow of energy within the body, called chi (or qi).
So, one learns how to move this energy with gentle physical movements and breathing. Finally, the practitioner learns how to move this chi with mind or intention.
Most of us have many blocked meridians and energy centers that prevent the body’s chi from reaching the vital glands in the endocrine system.
Circulating the energy of the body using qigong helps to open these pathways, allowing this energy to reach these areas and activate the pineal gland.
In truth, the meditation practice described above is a form of qigong as you are focusing your intention on the pineal gland to increase the flow of energy in this region.
If you first develop sensitivity to your body’s energy through qigong before doing a meditation practice like this, it will be much more effective.
In fact, if you practice Zhan Zhang every day and your body opens up, you will experience a greater flow of energy throughout your body and brain.
Pineal gland Qigong using the sun
Many forms of qigong training can influence the activation of the pineal gland.
One particular exercise in Master Shou-Yu Liang and Wen-Ching Wu’s excellent book, Qigong Empowerment, combines qigong with another method we just discussed above the sun:
When the sun begins to rise above the horizon, extend one of your arms towards the sun and point your index finger towards the sun.
Look at the sun from your index finger to the sun. While the sun is still red, focus on the sun when it fully rises above the horizon. It is said that with this training, one will open the Celestial Eye ».
In Taoism, the celestial eye is another term for the third eye.
Pineal Gland Activation Method: Brain Failure
Our brains operate on a range of brain wave patterns. Each pattern establishes a particular state of consciousness.
From highest to lowest, these are the most commonly cited brain wave frequencies and their associated state of consciousness:
- Brain wave frequency : gamma (40 – 100 hertz). State of Consciousness: Peak Ecstatic Experiences / Oneness.
- Brain wave frequency : high beta (22 – 40 hertz). State of Consciousness: Anxiety / Nervousness.
- Brain wave frequency : low Beta (14 – 22 Hertz). State of Consciousness: Alert / Focus.
- Brain wave frequency : alpha (8 – 14 hertz). State of consciousness: Physically relaxed / Meditative.
- Brain wave frequency : Theta waves (4 to 8 Hertz). State of consciousness: deeply relaxed / REM sleep.
- Brain wave frequency : delta (0.5 – 4 hertz). State of consciousness: sleepless sleep / deeper meditation.
If you do a Google search on “third eye activation” you will get lots of results for “brainwave entrainment” audio programs and sound clips on Youtube. These programs are usually a combination of binaural beats and isochronous tones.
When you simultaneously listen to a pure-tone sine wave in your left ear and another sine wave in your right ear, you create an aural illusion called a binaural rhythm.
An isochronous tone is simply a pure tone that turns on and off quickly. Sound engineers calibrate these tones at specific frequencies.
The objective of these programs is to induce a particular state of consciousness by incorporating the brain to the frequencies of sounds.
Although there is a lack of controlled research studies, preliminary research suggests that the incorporation of brain waves facilitates a change in brain wave patterns and has a therapeutic effect.
However, the effects of these changes are only temporary. The best benefits of brain wave attraction come when used in conjunction with meditation.
Brain wave frequencies for pineal gland activation
The question for us here is: What brain wave patterns support the activation of the pineal gland? While there is no clear answer, the research points us in several directions.
This study of two individuals during an experience with ayahuasca (DMT or dimethyltryptamine) found that they produced an increase in “overall coherence of the EEG in the frequency bands of 36-44 Hz and 50-64 Hz for both subjects.” These frequency bands are known as gamma waves.
So we must consider which brain wave frequencies are consistent with the pineal gland’s main chemical production: melatonin. The answer is delta waves – the brain waves we experience during deep, dreamless sleep.
Finally, what frequency is active during REM sleep? Theta waves. And theta and gamma waves work together during REM sleep.
Put all of the above together, and to use brain wave entrainment for pineal gland activation, use binaural rhythms and isochronic tones that activate delta, theta, and gamma frequencies.
Pineal Gland Activation Method: Dimethyltryptamine
The pineal synthesizes and secretes a hormone called melatonin. But the pineal is also responsible for another chemical that we don’t discuss.
In his groundbreaking book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, psychiatrist and researcher Rick Strassman theorized that the pineal gland produces another important chemical called N, N-dimethyltryptamine, or DMT.
And, in 2013, Strassman along with other researchers did find dimethyltryptamine in the pineal gland of rats. (It seems that science is still unclear if the pineal produces DMT or simply regulates it.)
Known as the “Molecule of Spirit,” dimethyltryptamine is a natural hallucinogen capable of producing extraordinary visions and mystical states of consciousness.
Dimethyltryptamine is similar to the properties of lysergic acid diethylamide (known as LSD or acid), but it occurs naturally in our bodies, while lysergic acid is a synthetic drug.
In dimethyltryptamine, Strassman explains:
«Dimethyltryptamine exists in all of our bodies and occurs in all the plant and animal kingdoms. It is part of the normal makeup of humans and other mammals; Marine animals; herbs and peas; toads and frogs; mushrooms and molds; and barks, flowers and roots.
In the 1970s, Japanese scientists discovered that the brain transports dimethyltryptamine across the blood-brain barrier in its tissues.
“I know of no other psychedelic drug that the brain treats with such enthusiasm … If dimethyltryptamine was just a negligible and irrelevant by-product of our metabolism, why does the brain go out of its way to push it to its limits?”
Researcher Graham Hancock theorizes that dimethyltryptamine is the lens of the pineal gland that allows us to see larger areas of our reality than we usually cannot access.
Dimethyltryptamine is present in the Amazon botanical tea called ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is a sacred tea made from the vine of the ayahuasca plant combined with the chacruna or chagropanga leaves.
It is reported that a very small amount Dimethyltryptamine is produced by the pineal gland each night while we dream. But when you take Ayahuasca, you get a massive increase in Dimethyltryptamine that can break down any existing calcification in your pineal.
This “herbal medicine” is taken as part of a South American shamanic ritual that guides participants through profound experiences, both “positive” and “negative,” as the content of their unconscious enters consciousness.
When used with the right mindset and environment, ayahuasca and other substances like iboga and psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) have the potential to heal our minds and activate our pineal glands. (Too bad they are classified as illegal substances).
However, taking these psychedelics in isolation – that is, without other transformation practices listed above – will likely only have a temporary effect on your pineal.
Achieve total brain coherence
Ultimately, all of the pineal gland activation methods mentioned above work to bring the entire brain online, not just the pineal.

How to approach third eye awakening
So when we talk about activating the pineal gland, we are talking about bringing the entire brain on line, integrating all the various regions of the brain.
While psychedelics seem to achieve this goal temporarily, methods such as meditation, sun gazing, and qigong give us the ability to change the physical structure of our consciousness over time.
As the pineal is activated and the brain becomes more integrated, one’s reality is perceived differently. You will begin to notice more of your unconscious behavior, which helps you to know your shadow.
You can awaken to many new realities about your life, the universe, and existence itself that were previously unavailable to you.
