Vitacillin: What is it? How does it work? Indications, Administration, Ingredients and Warnings

It is a topical cream that is used to treat minor skin infections.

It should not be used for deep cuts or punctures, severe burns, serious infections, or untreated skin.

Suitable for both adults and older children, Vitacillin should be used externally and should never be applied to the eyes, mouth or nose, or large areas of the skin. It can be applied in the affected area up to three times a day for a week.

If the condition persists after a week of use or if the ointment causes redness, rash, irritation, burning, hearing or urination, or itching, the user should stop using it and contact a doctor.

The ointment should be stored in a cool, dry place, so avoid storage in the bathroom or kitchen.

Despite the relative lack of medical research, Vitacilina has gained a following among those suffering from acne. Many reported on the Acne.org website that the over-the-counter ointment helped their acne.

Vitacillin is comparatively less toxic than other antibiotics, and side effects are more likely in those sensitive to penicillins and those with a history of asthma or allergies.

The most common side effects experienced by approximately 10% of users are rashes. Less common side effects can be itching and skin allergies.

Indications

Topically prevent or treat superficial skin infections caused by susceptible organisms for superficial skin infections. It can help prevent disease in minor skin lesions (cuts, scrapes, burns).

Treating severe skin infections usually requires systemic anti-infective therapy.

How does it work?

Neomycin cream contains the active ingredient neomycin, a type of medicine called an aminoglycoside antibiotic.

Antibiotics are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Neomycin works by affecting the production of specific proteins of the bacteria that are necessary for its survival.

It causes bacteria to produce abnormal and defective proteins. This eventually kills the bacteria and clears the infection. Neomycin is applied to the skin to treat infections caused by bacteria.

Applying for the medicine directly to the infected area allows the neomycin to act on the bacteria causing the infection.
