It belongs to a class of medications known as bronchodilators.
It is used to relieve symptoms associated with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung conditions. It works by opening the airways, making breathing easier.
Controlling these symptoms can decrease time lost from work or school. Metaproterenol is a bronchodilator (beta-2 receptor agonist) that works by opening the airways to make breathing easier. This medicine is also known as orciprenaline in other countries.
Presentations of orciprenaline
Orciprenaline is available in the following forms:
- Inhalant powder.
- Inhalation Solution.
- Metered-dose inhaler.
- Oral solution.
- Oral tablet.
Management
Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually 3 to 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Children from 4 to 12 years old should take 5 ml 3 times a day; children over 12 years old should take 10 ml 3 times a day. Your doctor may recommend different dosages, depending on the circumstances.
If you are taking the syrup, measure the dose carefully with a medicine cup/spoon available from your pharmacist.
Follow your doctor’s prescription strictly. Please do not take more of this medicine or take it more often than recommended by your doctor. If you have been instructed to use this medication on a daily schedule, use it regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it.
If you take other asthma medications by mouth or inhale the devices, ask your doctor how to take this medication together with your other asthma medications correctly.
If you notice more minor the effect with this medicine than usual, if your symptoms get worse, or if you feel you need to take any of your asthma medicines more often than recommended, seek immediate medical attention.
What side are effects possible with orciprenaline?
Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a drug when taken in regular doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.
The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking this drug:
- Dizziness.
- Fast or pounding heartbeat.
- Headache.
- Dizziness.
- Nausea.
- Nervousness.
- Perspiration.
- Tremors
- Vomiting
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Seizures
- Urticaria.
- Increased blood pressure.
- Signs of low potassium levels in the blood (for example, weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat).
Dose
Take orciprenaline precisely as prescribed by your doctor.
The dose of orciprenaline that your doctor recommends will be based on the following (use any or all that apply):
- The condition is being treated.
- Other medical conditions you have.
- Other medications you are taking.
- How do you respond to this drug?
- Your weight
- Your height.
- Your age.
- Your gender.
Orciprenaline is available in the following strengths:
- Metaproterenol 0.4% inhalation solution.
- Metaproterenol 0.6% inhalation solution.
- Metaproterenol 0.65 mg / in inhalation aerosol.
- Metaproterenol 0.65 Mg / inh inhalation is aerosol with an adapter.
- Metaproterenol 10 Mg tableta oral.
- Metaproterenol 10 mg / 5 ml de jarabe oral.
- Metaproterenol 20 Mg tableta oral.
- Metaproterenol 5% inhalation solution.
- Metaproterenol composition powder.
Orciprenaline precautions
Before taking metaproterenol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or similar bronchodilators (e.g., albuterol, salmeterol, terbutaline); or sympathomimetic drugs (eg, epinephrine, pseudoephedrine); or if you have any other allergies.
This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have specific heart rhythm problems.
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:
- Heart disease (for example, other abnormal heartbeats, ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure ).
- Seizures
- Overactive thyroid ( hyperthyroidism )
- Diabetes.
This medicine may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or perform activities that require alertness until you are sure you can safely perform those activities. Limit alcoholic beverages.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
The elderly may be at increased risk for heart effects while using this drug.
This medicine should be used only when needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
