This medicine increases movement through the digestive system. It is used to treat the symptoms of stomach disorders.
It can also prevent nausea and vomiting caused by certain medications.
Due to safety concerns, this drug should not be used by breastfeeding women to increase breast milk production.
What Motilium is used for
Motilium is used to treat the following conditions in adults:
Nausea and vomiting, discomfort caused by a slow-moving stomach known as gastroparesis.
Symptoms include not being able to finish a meal, feeling “too full” or bloated after a meal, loss of appetite, feeling sick and perhaps vomiting, or burping without relief.
Motilium is an antiemetic and prokinetic medicine.
It works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger in the brain that causes the sensation of nausea and vomiting, and it also increases movement or contractions of the stomach and intestines, allowing food to move more quickly through the stomach.
Your doctor may have prescribed Motilium for another reason.
How does it work?
This medicine works by blocking chemicals in the brain and intestine. This causes improved movements and faster gastric emptying that helps prevent vomiting.
Motilium tablets contain the active ingredient domperidone, a type of medicine called a dopamine antagonist. It works in two ways.
Domperidone works primarily by blocking dopamine receptors found at the upper end of the digestive system.
This causes tightening of the muscles at the entrance to the stomach, relaxation of the muscles at the exit of the stomach, and further contraction of the muscles in the stomach.
These actions speed up the passage of food through the stomach into the intestine, which helps prevent vomiting and reduces feelings of sickness, bloating, and fullness.
It also prevents food from flowing the wrong way through the stomach and thus prevents reflux (regurgitation of stomach contents back into the food chain).
Domperidone also blocks dopamine receptors in the brain, known as the chemoreceptor activating zone (CTZ).
The chemoreceptor trigger zone is activated by nerve messages from the stomach when an irritant is present.
It is also activated directly by agents that circulate in the blood, for example, chemotherapy drugs. Once activated, it sends messages to another area of the brain, the vomiting center, which sends messages to the gut, causing the vomiting reflex.
Blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone prevents nausea messages from sending to the vomiting center. This reduces the feeling of nausea and prevents vomiting.
