It is a medicine that should only provide short-term relief from constipation.
Consult your doctor if you are still constipated after using bisacodyl for five days.
Constipation can be caused by a poor diet, not drinking enough water, and not going to the bathroom as soon as you consider it necessary. Pregnancy, lack of exercise or movement (such as being sick in bed), and some medications, including painkillers, can also cause constipation.
However, many people take laxatives when they do not need them because they think they are constipated unless they go to the bathroom daily. This is not the case.
A proper definition of constipation is going to the bathroom less often than is normal for you and passing hard stools (stools).
Bisacodyl works by stimulating your bowel muscles to move stool through your body. This helps you go to the bathroom. The tablets usually have an effect within 10-12 hours.
Suppositories will take between 10 and 60 minutes to work but usually have their effect in 30 minutes. Bisacodyl preparations are available without a prescription in pharmacies and other outlets.
Bisacodyl is sometimes used to cleanse the bowel before a medical examination that requires the bowel to be empty. When used this way, your hospital or clinic will provide you with a small supply of the medication.
Precautions
To make sure this is the proper treatment for you, seek the advice of a doctor or pharmacist before you start using the medication if any of the following conditions apply:
- If you are pregnant, trying to have a baby or breastfeeding. You should only take medicines while waiting or feeding a baby on a doctor’s recommendation.
- If it is for a child under ten years old. This is because bisacodyl should only be given to children on the advice of a doctor or health professional.
- If you have severe pain in your belly (abdomen) and feel bad.
- If you have recently had intestinal or abdominal surgery.
- If you lack fluid in the body (dehydrated), take ‘water tablets’ (diuretics).
- If you are taking other medications. This includes any medication you accept that is available to buy without a prescription, herbal, and complementary medicines.
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a cure.
Administration
Before beginning this treatment, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet inside your package. The brochure will give you more information about the medication and a complete list of the side effects you may experience when taking it.
Take one or two 5 mg tablets with a drink of water (do not take it with milk). The tablets are taken around 10-12 hours to function; therefore, it is best to take them at bedtime. Do not chew or break the tablets.
Can a suppository be used instead of taking tablets?
Use a suppository daily. The work will take between 10 and 60 minutes and, therefore, should be used preferably in the morning.
Usually, it will have its effect in 30 minutes. There are two suppository strengths: 10 mg, which is suitable for adults, and 5 mg, which is ideal for older children (and younger children when prescribed by a doctor).
Bisacodyl should only be used for a short time. This is because your bowel may begin to depend on this type of laxative to make it work instead of working alone.
How to use a suppository?
- Remove the suppository from the wrapper.
- Moisten the suppository with a bit of tap water.
- With your finger, gently push the suppository into the posterior (rectum) duct as far as possible, with the pointed end first.
- Stand still for a moment to help hold the suppository in place. It will start working in approximately 20 minutes or so.
- Wash hands after use.
Side effects
Along with its beneficial effects, most medications can cause unwanted side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medication, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist if the following side effects continue or become bothersome. Some could be:
- Abdominal cramping.
- Imbalance of electrolytes and fluids.
- Excessive diarrhea
- Nausea.
- Rectal burning.
- Giddiness.
- He retched.
recommendations
Do not take remedies against indigestion at the same time as bisacodyl tablets. This is because bisacodyl tablets have a special coating affected by antacid preparations.
If you need to take something for indigestion, take it more than two hours before taking the medication or wait two hours after taking it.
A healthy diet that contains fiber (bread and whole grains, bran, fruits, and green leafy vegetables), six to eight glasses of water per day, and daily exercise is essential to maintain a healthy intestinal function.
For people with constipation problems, foods such as cakes, puddings, sugar, candy, cheese, and cakes can worsen things.
