It is an anti-ischemic (antianginal) metabolic agent, used for the preventive treatment of episodes of angina pectoris .
It is also used to treat Meniere’s disease and as a complementary treatment for visual disorders of circulatory origin, vertigo, and tinnitus.
Trimetazidine (Vastarel) improves myocardial glucose utilization by inhibiting fatty acid metabolism, increases coronary reserve, prevents sudden increase in blood pressure, and reduces the frequency of angina attacks.
Vastarel uses
Trimetazidine is prescribed for the long-term treatment of angina pectoris as well as tinnitus and dizziness. Trimetazidine tablets improve myocardial glucose utilization by inhibiting fatty acid metabolism.
This is also known as a fatty acid oxidation inhibitor. Additionally, trimetazidine modulates mitochondrial metabolism to energize and revive damaged heart tissue.
Trimetazidine has been shown to have the ability to reverse the deadly impact of decreased blood flow to the heart. This is the main cardiovascular disease behind most heart attacks.
Dosage
Always take Vastarel exactly as your doctor prescribes it. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults : the recommended dose of Vastarel is one tablet to be taken three times a day with meals.
Children : not recommended for children.
Patients with kidney disease and the elderly: if you have kidney problems or if you are older than 75 years, your doctor may adjust the recommended dose.
For patients with severe kidney disease: not recommended.
If you forget to take one or more doses, do not take a double dose to make up for a forgetfulness.
This medicine has been prescribed for you. Do not pass it on to others. It can harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.
Overdose
If you take too many tablets, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
Note : in case of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your scheduled dose, resume treatment normally. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
Contraindications
Vastarel tablets are contraindicated in the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to trimetazidine, the active ingredient, or to any of the inactive ingredients present in the tablets.
- Parkinson’s disease, parkinsonian symptoms, tremors, nervous agitation syndrome, and other movement-related disorders.
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 ml / min).
- During pregnancy.
Possible side effects
Common side effects of trimetazidine tablets are:
- Dizziness
- Headache.
- Abdominal pain.
- Diarrhea.
- Dyspepsia.
- Nausea and vomiting
- Acne.
- Itching.
- Urticaria.
- Asthenia.
Seek immediate medical attention or go to your nearest doctor’s clinic, hospital, or emergency room if you experience:
- An allergic reaction or have a hypersensitivity reaction.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- Swelling of the limbs or face.
- Hives and skin rashes.
This is not an exhaustive list of all the adverse effects of Vastarel, you may experience other side effects. However, it is the most commonly known side effects.
If you experience other side effects that bother you, contact your doctor or pharmacist and explain the symptoms in detail.
Warnings and cautions
Vastarel tablets may not be safe or suitable for all patients and dosage adjustments may be required to obtain the optimal level of the active ingredient.
Vastarel is not a cure for angina and should not be used to treat unstable angina pectoris as initial therapy.
Pregnancy
Trimetazidine has been classified by the FDA. As category C of pregnancy.
Animal reproduction studies do not indicate a direct or indirect adverse effect on the fetus. Since there are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of trimetazidine in pregnant women, it is recommended as a precautionary measure, to avoid the use of trimetazidine during pregnancy.
If pregnancy is confirmed while taking generic Vastarel tablets, consult your doctor for advice on whether to continue treatment.
Lactation
It is not known whether trimetazidine is excreted in human milk. A risk to newborns / babies cannot be ruled out and therefore it is recommended that trimetazidine tablets are not used during breastfeeding.
Effects on ability to drive and use machines
In post-marketing experience, dizziness and drowsiness have been reported in certain patients taking trimetazidine tablets. This can affect the ability to drive and use machines.
