Mechanism of action

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has a similar mechanism of action to benzodiazepines.

However, instead of binding to the gamma subunit like a benzodiazepine, it appears to bind to the beta subunit of the GABA-A receptor.

Regardless, it has the same effect on chloride movement in the neuron when the main inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA, binds to the GABA-A receptor, causing a hyperpolarized state.

Additionally, valerian has been shown to decrease GABA elimination or metabolism, allowing GABA to remain longer.

Hawthorn can improve digitalis activity and interact with beta-blockers, class III antiarrhythmics, and other cardioactive herbs.

Spasmine is not known to have any particular side effects.

Warnings and Contraindications

Contains lactose and sucrose.

Due to the presence of lactose and sucrose, this drug is contraindicated in cases of congenital galactosemia, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or lactase deficiency.
