Chorionic gonadotropin is a drug whose actions are almost the same as those of luteinizing hormone (LH), which is produced by the pituitary gland.
It is a hormone also normally produced by the placenta in pregnancy. Chorionic gonadotropin has different uses for women and men.
In women, chorionic gonadotropin is used to help conception occur . It is usually given in combination with other medications such as menotropins and urofollitropin.
Many women who are treated with these drugs have generally already tried clomiphene alone (eg, Serofene) and have not yet been able to conceive. Novarel is also used in in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs.
In men, LH and chorionic gonadotropin stimulate the testes to produce male hormones such as testosterone. Testosterone causes enlargement of the penis and testicles and growth of pubic and armpit hair. It also increases sperm production.
Although chorionic gonadotropin has been prescribed to help some patients lose weight, it should never be used in this way. When used incorrectly, chorionic gonadotropin can cause serious problems.
Chorionic gonadotropin should only be administered under the immediate supervision of your doctor.
The gonad-stimulating hormone secreted by the placenta during pregnancy; obtained from the urine of pregnant women; recombinant form now available.
HCG mimics the actions of LH; HCG induces an increase in LH after the use of ovulation induction protocols in women; it is also used to treat hypogonadism and oligospermia in men.
How to use
- Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be administered.
- This medicine is given as an injection into one of your muscles.
- A nurse or other healthcare provider will give you this medicine.
- You can learn how to administer your medicine at home. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection.
- Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you.
- Use a new needle and syringe each time you inject your medicine.
- Missed dose : Call your doctor or pharmacist for instructions.
- This medicine comes as a powder that must be mixed with a liquid before you can use it.
- If you store this medicine at home, keep the dry powder at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
- After mixing the powder with the liquid, keep the mixture in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
- You can keep Novarel mixes in the refrigerator for up to 60 days.
- Dispose of used needles in a hard, closed container that the needles cannot pass through. Keep this container away from children and pets.
- Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or healthcare provider about the best way to dispose of your remaining medicines, containers, and other supplies.
- Throw away the old medicine once it has expired.

Dosage and uses
This medicine can be used in:
- Pediatrics.
- Adults.
Dosage Forms and Strengths
Prefilled syringe 250 mcg powder for reconstitution 10,000 units / vial.
Induction of ovulation and pregnancy
In these processes the dose is 5,000-10,000 units 1 day after the last dose of menotropins.
Induction of spermatogenesis
Hypogonadism and hypogonadotropism in men: 1000-2000 units 2-3 times / week (may require 2-3 months of therapy); if necessary, add follitropin alfa or menopausal gonadotropin to induce spermatogenesis; continue hCG therapy at the dose required to maintain testosterone levels.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to components.
- Early puberty.
- Prostatic carcinoma or other androgen-dependent neoplasia.
Precautions
Use with caution in cardiovascular disease, asthma , history of migraines, kidney failure, seizure disorders
It is not effective in the treatment of obesity
May induce precocious puberty in children treated for cryptorchidism (discontinue if signs of precocious puberty appear).
Safety and efficacy not established in children <4 years of age.
