Bacitracin: What is it? Composition, Side Effects, Instructions for Use, Precautions and Storage

It is an antibiotic that is used to treat localized infections in the skin.

It is topical preparation, recommended to combat or prevent minor bacterial infections in the skin caused by burns, scrapes, small cuts or even to heal new tattoos.

This medication can not be used for serious skin lesions, animal bites, deep wounds or burns of second and third degree and above.

Bacitracin does not work as an antidote for infections caused by viruses or fungi and self-medication is not recommended if the origin of the skin lesion is not known, the suggestion is to consult a doctor before using the medicine, because its Bad or excessive use can decrease its effectiveness.

Composition

The dermal ointment can contain in each gram:

  • Neomicina 5,00 mg.
  • Bacitracin 500 UI
  • Liquid and solid petroleum jelly.

Side effects

The general lines have no side effects but inappropriate, excessive use and over prolonged periods without medical or pharmaceutical prescription can lead to other types of skin infections such as fungi or other bacteria immune to the medication.

An allergic reaction produced by the use of Bacitracin is irregular and unlikely when applying the drug to the skin, however, when presenting:

  • Eruptions
  • Swelling.
  • Redness
  • Ardor.
  • Itch.
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness

Its use must be eliminated and the treating physician must be contacted to examine the lesion again and determine if the reaction is produced by the treatment with the medicine or the infection is immune to the antibiotic.

How to use

For a quick recovery of the affected area, the prescription of the attending physician or pharmacist should be followed, if they are not counted, read the instructions included in the product package.

If the antibiotic package does not have the necessary information for its application, you can follow the following instructions:

  • Before applying Bacitracin, wash your hands with plenty of water and soap.
  • Verify the expiration date before use.
  • Clean the skin area with the lesion.
  • Apply a small amount of the medication, it will not improve the injury faster by applying more antibiotic than recommended.
  • For best results use Bacitracin every day at the same time 1 to 3 times or according to medical indications.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the medication.

To prevent further lacerations when using the antibiotic treatment, follow the instructions below:

  • If you use the aerosol medication, shake before use and avoid contact with eyes, nose or throat, if this occurs wash with plenty of water.
  • Do not prolong the use of the medication, unless it is suggested by the attending physician.
  • Do not use this product for more than a week, unless recommended by your doctor.
  • If the injury persists or deteriorates further, call your doctor immediately and stop using the antibiotic.

Precautions

As it is a compound medicine it can have inactive ingredients that produce allergic reactions or other complications, it is important that before using bacitracin the treating doctor or the pharmacist is informed if he has presented allergies to previously prescribed medications.

All antibiotics, including Bacitracin, should only be used if necessary during pregnancy, because its use during pregnancy, including breastfeeding, is not known if it affects the state of the fetus or breast milk.

It is important to take into account that the effects of the antibiotic can change if another medication is being taken at the same time, even if the treatment is not effective. To prevent this, give your doctor a list of the medicines you are using at the moment.

While you are using Bacitracin, do not stop, start or change the dose of other prescription drugs before. Wait to finish the treatment or ask your treating doctor if you can use them at the same time.

Storage

This antibiotic can have several pharmaceutical presentations with different requirements for storage, you must read the indications on the label, the recommendation is that it is at room temperature between 59-86 degrees Fahrenheit or between 15-30 degrees Celsius.

Avoid that it is within the reach of children or pets, should not be placed in the refrigerator. If the product is damaged and the product is exposed to the environment, do not use it as it can become contaminated and lose its effectiveness.

Dispose of the antibiotic packaging correctly after use or expiration, do not throw it in the toilet, or in drains unless instructed to do so.
