Pleurovac: What is it? Special Care, Pain Control, Exercise, Activity and Recommendations

It is a drainage system which facilitates the elimination of the gas or liquid content formed in the pleura through the placement of an endothoracic tube.

A Pleurovac unit collects drainage from a chest tube.

The patented Pleurovac series is the clear choice for convenient, flexible and safe chest drainage .

Its fluctuations can occur in the suction of the source or the flow of air from a patient leak, the desired imposed suction level is automatically maintained without the need for clinical intervention.

Setup is quick and easy, and there is no need to fill the suction chamber. Contains:

  • High negativity relief valve that allows negative pressure filtered manual venting.
  • Needleless tubing connectors for collection sampling.
  • Large Capacity Collection Chamber 2350cc disposable unit safely collects infectious fluids.
  • Precise pressure control positive pressure (+1 cm) and negative pressure (-13 cm) are limited to facilitate drainage collection and prevent mediastinal change by helping to restore normal intrathoracic pressure.

The Pleurovac wet suction series has been the industry standard since its introduction in 1967. The wet suction models are safe and accurate.

This offers an expertly patented air leak meter to quantify patient air leakage, needleless tubing connectors for collection sampling and is available with ATS bags

The A-4301 Pneumonectomy System maintains the mediastinum in a physiologically optimal position and allows satisfactory drainage in the presence of infection or contamination.

The A-4301 allows immediate diagnosis of dangerous leaking air and maintains maximum drainage of the pleural space.

Is there any special care that I should know about?

Try not to worry about going home with a Pleurovac evacuation unit. Most people find it easy to care for themselves with the help of visiting nurses.

Follow these guidelines to help you take care of yourself:

  • Ask your doctor what special signs of drainage to watch for.
  • Your doctor may ask you to call if the drainage changes color or becomes very large.
  • Keep the Pleurovac unit in an upright position. If it falls off, pick it up again. It will continue to drain. The next time the nurse visits you, tell the visiting nurse that the unit fell.
  • Keep the Pleurovac unit below hood level to promote gravity drainage.
  • Make sure the unit is below chest level when sitting, standing, lying down, and walking.
  • Always keep 2 orange clamps nearby.
  • If any tubing becomes disconnected, secure the tubing closest to your body with both clamps. Call your doctor for directions.
  • You may need to go to the emergency room if the problem cannot be resolved.
  • Check the tubes often to make sure they are not kinked.
  • When the tube is kinked, it will not drain properly and you may have trouble breathing.
  • You can shower with the chest tube.
  • Cover the area where the chest tube comes out with a small plastic bag and glue it well.
  • Bring the unit into the shower area and place it outside the shower curtain or door. The unit should never be under direct flow of water.
  • You may want to shower just before the visiting nurse comes.
  • The nurse can then check the site and apply a new bandage.
  • You will need to speak with your visiting nurse to schedule your shower time with your nursing visit.

Pain control

Take pain control medications as directed by your visiting doctor or nurse. If you have increased pain or discomfort contact your visiting physician or nurse.

Exercise and activity

Gentle exercise like walking is important to help your breathing and circulation. You should talk to your doctor about any other activities and exercises you want to do.

Contact your doctor if you have:

A temperature of 38.3 ° C or 101 ° F or higher.

  • An incision that is getting red, has opened, or has discharge.
  • Bright red drain or any other color change in the drain.
  • A sudden increase in the amount of drainage, such as 100 ml or more.
  • Pain that gets worse
  • Difficulty breathing.

recommendations

What should I do if the chest tube falls off?

The chest tube is sutured to the skin and taped well so that the tube does not fall out. If your chest tube falls out, don’t panic.

Follow these steps:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Open the package of petroleum jelly coated gauze.
  • Open the square gauze packet.
  • Cover the wound with the Vaseline gauze and then the square gauze.
  • Place the elastoplast tape on the gauze.
  • After you’ve covered the site, call your doctor for instructions.

Your doctor will decide if you need to be seen or if you go to the nearest clinic or emergency department to be checked. Talk to your visiting nurse or doctor if you have questions or concerns
