Dissociated Diet: Mechanism of Action, Table of Foods, Combinations, Menu and Rules

This diet is based on a physiological presumption.

It is presumed that the digestive system can not assimilate fats, proteins and carbohydrates properly when they are consumed in the same food.

This diet does not restrict any food, but some foods can not be taken together.

This diet was created by Dr. William Howard Hay in 1911.

Since then, many people have resorted to this method in the hope of losing extra kilos without having to count too many calories.

Mechanism of action of the dissociated diet

This eating pattern acts for a short period of time, and makes eating extremely boring.

The basis of the dissociated diet is the theory that the consumption of alkaline and acidic foods at the same time reduces the speed of the digestive process and imbalances the metabolic process.

This is due to the fact that the digestive system is overloaded with work trying to establish the ideal conditions to digest alkaline and acidic foods at the same time.

Proteins are acid-forming, carbohydrates form alkalis.

Food table

The foods in the dissociated diet are classified in this way:

  • Acid fruits: Lemons, tangerines, oranges, grapefruit. This category includes tomatoes.
  • Semi-acid fruits: Apricots, cherries, strawberries, figs, kiwi, apples, peaches, pears, watermelon, grapes.
  • Fresh fruit: dried apricots, prunes, dates, dried fruits, figs and raisins.
  • Consistent fats: Olives, avocado, pistachios, sesame, and olive oil.
  • Cereals: Rice, wheat, corn and derivatives, such as corn flakes, flour, pasta, popcorn, polenta, assorted breads.
  • Vegetables: Artichokes, aubergines, squash, dried beans, green beans, lentils, cucumber, pepper, radishes, red beets, soybeans, carrots.
  • Vegetables with high starch content: Chestnuts, sweet potatoes, potatoes, banana, carrot.
  • Green vegetables: celery, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus mushrooms, spinach, lettuce of all kinds, cabbage.

Combinations not recommended in the dissociated diet

The following combinations must not be made

  • Fatty foods with proteins.
  • Different groups of carbohydrates in the same food.
  • Carbohydrates with proteins.
  • Vegetables and vegetables can not be combined with fruits. The fruit should be eaten alone, in the snacks between meals.


There is a positive element that stands out from the dissociated diet: no food is restricted, only the combination that must be made with these is restricted.

It is a model of diet that is easily followed, it is likely that at the beginning it is somewhat difficult to get used to the combinations of foods.

However, with a sample of a daily and balanced menu of the dissociated diet, the basic principle can be understood.

Day one

  • Breakfast: Homemade musli cereal with milk and green tea
  • Mid morning: a fruit
  • Lunch: Vegetable noodles julienne. Yogurt or tea.
  • Snack: A fruit
  • Dinner: Green salad with baked white fish, tea.

Day two

  • Breakfast: Bread with toasted olive oil. Coffee or tea.
  • Mid morning: A fruit.
  • Lunch: Baked chicken and vegetables, yogurt.
  • Snack: Yogurt, tea.
  • Dinner: Scrambled eggs with vegetables, tea.

Day Three

  • Breakfast: Sausages, green tea.
  • Mid morning: A fruit.
  • Lunch: Vegetable salad, yogurt, tea.
  • Snack: A fruit.
  • Dinner: Steamed julienne vegetables, French omelette with prawns, tea.

Day four

  • Breakfast: Cereals and yogurt, red tea.
  • Mid morning: A fruit.
  • Lunch: Turkey in stew, tea.
  • Snack: A fruit.
  • Dinner: Steamed clams, green vegetable salad, yogurt.

Day five

  • Breakfast: Defatted cheese, Yogurt, Tea.
  • Mid morning : A fruit.
  • Lunch: Macaroni and mushrooms with Provencal herbs, a yogurt.
  • Snack: A fruit.
  • Dinner: Salmon and grilled asparagus, tea.

Day six

  • Breakfast: Toasted bread with oil, yogurt, tea.
  • Mid morning: A fruit.
  • Lunch: Grilled veal, baked vegetables, tea.
  • Snack: A fruit.
  • Dinner: Sautéed vegetables, asparagus omelet, tea.

Seventh day

  • Breakfast: Homemade musli cereal with yogurt, tea.
  • Mid morning: A fruit.
  • Lunch: Stew of turkey and vegetables, yogurt.
  • Snack: A fruit.
  • Dinner: Vegetable soup, steamed fish, tea.

Rules in the dissociated diet

  • You should not eat meat protein or carbohydrates after 7:30 p.m.
  • To accompany lunch or dinner, you drink coffee, tea or yogurt (only dairy product that can be eaten as a dessert).
  • With the food you can not consume soft drinks or juice.
  • All spices are allowed to be used sparingly as they are compatible with any food.
  • The consumption of sugar or alcohol is not allowed.
  • A digestion period of 3 hours must be respected between every two meals.
  • Do not consume milk after meals, just consume tea or coffee.
  • You can drink only water with meals.
  • Fry in little oil and very hot, then remove the excess oil pressing the frying against a paper napkin.
  • The ice cream is eaten alone, without adding creams or cookies.
  • To consume soups can prepare it with the foods that belong to the same group.
  • Eat honey and lemon in the morning before breakfast.
  • For dinners the ideal is fish or seafood.
